Allison Johnson, teacher of Anchor district, Whitehouse, Westmoreland, died from injuries she sustained after being hit by a car along the Whitehouse main road in the parish on Saturday.
Reports from the Whitehouse police are that about 7:20 p.m., Johnson, 42, was attempting to cross the roadway when she was hit by a white Toyota Wish motor car.
She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
More than 50 pedestrians have been killed in crashes since the start of the year. Statistics from the Road Safety Unit indicate that as of July 15, some 253 persons have died in road crashes.
A breakdown of the main causes revealed that 59 motorists died as result of excessive speeding with no regards to conditions, 27 motorists died from failing to keep to the near side or to the proper traffic lane, and 16 pedestrians died by walking or standing in the road.
Director of the unit, Deidrie Hudson Sinclair, has urged road users to exercise caution on the nation’s roads.
